• Genetic counseling
• High risk pregnancy
• Genetic diagnosis
Genetics has of great importance in the field of pregnancy and childbirth, and in the world of medicine in general. Genetic diseases can be ruled out prior to pregnancy or prenatal birth, and treated accordingly. This stage is so critical that it can prevent the birth of a fetus with a defect that could endanger his life.
It is recommended that couples whose family has a disease or syndrome with a genetic background are able to obtain genetic counseling before or during the earliest stage of pregnancy.
Examples of cases in which it is important to receive genetic counseling as soon as possible include:
• Couples with a child or fetus diagnosed with Down Syndrome or other chromosomal disorder – such a chance to have another baby with such a disorder are higher than the general population.
• Couples with a child or fetus diagnosed with a physical defect such as heart defects, brain defects, open spine defects. Such a couple has an increased risk of recurrence of a similar problem. Today, it is possible to diagnose in many cases the genetic background and to suggest ways of treatment and prevention before and during the next pregnancy.
• Couples with a child or fetus who were diagnosed with a genetic disease or whose parents were diagnosed as carriers. It is possible now to offer such couples early genetic diagnosis during pregnancy and even to perform pre-implantation genetic diagnosis of embryos obtained in vitro fertilization (PGD)
• Couples with recurrent miscarriages – in many cases, the cause of the miscarriage can be diagnosed in many cases and ways of preventing future pregnancies are suggested.
