Genetics has of great importance in the field of pregnancy and childbirth, and in the world of medicine in general. Genetic diseases can be ruled out prior to pregnancy or prenatal birth, and treated accordingly. This stage is so critical that it can prevent the birth of a fetus with a defect that could endanger his life.
It is recommended that couples whose family has a disease or syndrome with a genetic background are able to obtain genetic counseling before or during the earliest stage of pregnancy.
When you need genetic counseling of Prof. Yuval Yaron
Examples of cases in which it is important to receive genetic counseling as soon as possible include:
- Couples with a child or fetus diagnosed with Down Syndrome or other chromosomal disorders have a higher chance of having another baby with such a disorder compared to the general population.
- Couples with a child or fetus diagnosed with physical defects such as heart defects, brain defects, or open spine defects also face an increased risk of recurrence of similar problems in future pregnancies. Genetic testing can now help diagnose the underlying genetic factors and suggest treatment and prevention options before and during subsequent pregnancies.
- Couples with a child or fetus diagnosed with a genetic disease, or whose parents are carriers of a genetic condition, can benefit from early genetic diagnosis during pregnancy. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis of embryos obtained through in vitro fertilization (IVF) is also an option for such couples.
- Couples experiencing recurrent miscarriages can often identify the cause of the miscarriage through diagnostic tests. This allows healthcare providers to suggest preventive measures for future pregnancies.
