Immunotherapy and biological treatment of children’s cancerous tumors is a new method that is more effective and helps to treat children in a safer way with much less severe side effects.
Children malignant diseases (cancers) are:
Neuroblastoma
Lymphoma (Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin)
Sarcoma
Rhabdomyosarcoma
Liver cancer
Glioma, glioblastoma
Spinal cord tumors
Wilms tumor
Bone cancer (incl. osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma)
Most types of cancer affecting young people younger than 18 include “explosion” cells that play a role in the formation of body tissues: blood and immune cells, bone and eye tissues, and even the brain. While chemotherapy and radiotherapy have improved the survival rates of children with cancer over the past few decades and are effective for about 80% of young patients, these treatments often cause severe, long-term side effects.
The FDA approved the targeted Dinutuximab in combination with chemotherapy for patients with neuroblastoma. For children with Hodgkin’s lymphoma Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) – immunotherapy against PD-1, is approved.
Bone morrow transplantation also helps young patients with neuroblastoma, leukemia and lymphoma. Lately a lot of effort has been made to improve this approach.
CAR T cells therapy showed efficacy in clinical trials for young patients with leukemia and lymphoma. Tisagenlecleucel (Kymriah) approved by the FDA for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
There are also other methods that undergo clinical trials for treatment of children and adolescents with sarcoma, neuroblastoma, leukemia, lymphoma, liver cancer, glioma, glioblastoma and other tumors. These studied methods are:
- control point inhibitors;
- oncolytic viruses;
- antibody-based immunotherapy;
- molecular-based vaccine, cell therapy.

Immunotherapy and biological medications are also used by Israeli physicians for a precision (personalized) treatment protocol for each patient.
Precision treatment can be prescribed based on the results of new molecular genetic tests, during which the genomic profile of the tumor is compiled. These tests give a high prognosis of the likelihood of treatment with drugs that are suitable for a specific patient.
